  • AIO: Found 2 hairs in my soup, I asked for a new bowl and for me to keep the bowl at the table then I'll swap it for the new one, staff refused so I asked for a refund...

I went to a soup restaurant tonight and when I got my food, I took one sip of the soup and while I was mixing the food a bit, found 2 hairs.
  • I asked the staff member to replace the bowl: "Hello, can I please have a replacement bowl as I found 2 hairs in my soup". The staff member was nice at first: "Sure", then I requested "before you take this bowl away, can I please have this bowl stay here and when the new bowl comes out, you can swap it so I know it's a new bowl".
  • Staff member declined my request and I said: "it's just to make sure that it is a new bowl".
  • I used to work in a restaurant myself and the dodgy things chefs do at the back and not replace it with a new plate/bowl.
  • Staff member then tried to take the bowl and I said: "ok, that's fine, can I please get a refund instead?"

  • Staff member said no, I then asked for a manager for a refund, and politely said to him: "I found 2 hairs in my bowl, can I please get a refund?" Manager was hesitant to give a refund at first: "we don't offer refunds".
  • Me being a Karen now: "you do know, finding 2 long hairs in my soup and not offering a refund is pretty bad service, that's ok, I'll sit here, write a review with the pictures I took of the bowl plus i'll just search up the number for food health and safety and file a review report".
  • Manager: "I'll process your refund" I am not the one to blackmail... but damn....... AIO?
  • a neon restaurant sign in the dark
  • CatLadyNoCats I've heard people say you should add far too much salt if this happens. Do this before they take it away. That way you can tell if they actually replaced it or not.
  • Material-Vast7621 NOR! Nah, you're not overreacting. Two hairs in your soup is already gross, and the fact they refused to swap it in front of you or issue a refund is wild. Any decent place would've apologized and replaced it without making it a whole debate. You just asked for basic hygiene and transparency.
  • Physical_Ad5135 We were with friends and ordered mozzarella cheese sticks at a restaurant. We all grabbed one, took a bite, and found that they were frozen inside. We did throw the bitten into sticks back onto the plate. They apparently dropped those exact sticks back into their fryer and we got back a plate with the food with bites out of it. WHAT THE HELL. NOR
  • eloquentpetrichor At first I was confused why you wanted to keep the bowl but damn that was a genius reason and I will be keeping it in mind
  • Dijjah NOR but even if they brought a new bowl, it was probably going to be from the same pot of soup as the first one. Restaurants usually make a large pot and then heat it up when orders come in. Or they make the stock and add the veggies when the orders come. They don't make individual pots for everyone. The best thing is to ask for a refund.
  • SongOfRuth The refund was ONLY requested because the bowl swap was refused.
  • inthe_go-go_lane I just keep thinking about the starting point of the hairs.... Likely two hairs didn't fall into your random bowl after it was poured. So wouldn't the origin be the whole pot of soup? A new bowl would've still had the essence of the hair and contamination anyway in that case. Yuck. I'm sorry this happened to you OP and I hope you do still contact food health & safety because that is nasty.
  • Cilad I have a friend that is a chef. This came up in a conversation once. He said if you find something in your food, leave. Because that is just what you saw with your own eyes. If this happens, there is a cleanliness problem at that restaurant. He said even if you have say eaten appetizers. Just say, I found a hair (for example) in my food. We are leaving. If they demand you pay, get your phone out and call the health department. And leave.
  • antwan_blaze I'd still write the review
  • FaeWolf4 You did right. I wouldn't trust them to give me a new bowl. I'd be paranoid they just took the hair out and brought it back.
  • zatistaz If you found two hairs.. why would you keep eating??? I'm not switching the bowl, I'm refusing to eat the soup anymore.
  • xjackberryx Definitely NOR. They are nasty. Post the review and on their page, their Yelp, and google!
